Sierra

“So are you going to tell me what’s going on?” her mother said as Sierra helped her parents place the chairs upside down on all the tables for the night.

Sierra avoided looking up. She had no idea whether her mother was talking about Cole or her being home. It could have easily been both, neither of which she wanted to go discuss with her mother.

“Nothing’s up,” she answered neutrally.

“Mmm-hmm,” Iris responded. “Well, I’m not gonna pry. I know you’re a grown woman who knows how to take care of herself.”

Now Sierra did look up at her mother. Again she wondered whether she was talking about Cole or her coming back home.

Before she could respond, a loud, booming baritone voice rang out from the doorway. “So the rumors are true!”

Sierra turned to see the large form of her brother, Ray, walking over with his arms spread. He’d been a formidable linebacker in high school and had managed to keep most of it from going to fat as he reached his thirties. She noted the small hint of a bulge over his waistband now that he spent most of his days selling insurance from behind a desk.

“Is it a blue moon, Mama?” he said as he neared her.

“Considering all that’s goin’ on lately, I’d say it’s something a lot stranger than that,” she responded, placing a hand on her hip and giving Sierra a pointed look.

She ignored her, cringing as Ray brought her up in a bear hug, lifting her off the ground as usual.

“Ray!” she protested, but finally gave in to a laugh.

He set her down and placed his fists on his hips to give her a critical look. “Another rumor I heard is that you been goin’ around with a certain Laverne Bronco. No love for the home team, huh?”

“I swear the way word spreads in this town. And y’all wonder why I prefer Houston.”

“So it’s true, then,” he replied, giving her a questioning look.

“I’m just wondering how all this happened right under our noses,” her mother chimed in.

“First of all, nothing ‘happened.’ Second of all, nothing is happening. Third, nothing is going to happen.” That should put the rumors to rest.

“It certainly looked like something happening while y’all were playin’ footsie under the table there,” her dad said, coming in from the back kitchen to catch the last part of that.

Ray and her mother just laughed.

“We were not playing—” She stopped realizing she was taking the bait. This was exactly the sort of teasing she had to suffer through back in high school when, instead of “playing footsie” with Cole, she disappeared each time he entered the place.

“I swear I can’t win with y’all!” she said, getting angry.

“Oh sweetheart, you know we’re just teasin’ you,” her mother said, finally backing down.

“But really, what is goin’ on there? And more importantly, why are you back in town?” her brother asked.

“A company is trying to buy Black Oak Ranch. My firm is representing them.” She left out the fact that it may soon be her former firm.
